Chef or Cook: The Question Most Households Get Wrong
Most people advertising for a "cook" in Pakistan are actually describing a chef, and most people who hire a chef only needed a cook. The two roles get used interchangeably in classified ads and WhatsApp groups, which is exactly why so many households end up disappointed either way: overpaying for formal training they never use, or hiring someone underqualified for the entertaining they actually do.
What a Cook Actually Does
A home cook handles the food a household eats on an ordinary day: daily Pakistani and continental meals, grocery planning, kitchen upkeep. They are not formally trained, and they are not the right fit for a dinner party menu or a wedding function. Cooks in Pakistan typically start around PKR 35,000 a month.
What a Chef Actually Does
A chef has formal culinary training and experience with multi-course menu planning and event-scale cooking. If you entertain regularly, host business dinners, or want restaurant-quality food at home on a normal basis, a chef is the right hire, not an upgraded cook. Chefs in Pakistan typically start around PKR 50,000 a month, reflecting the training gap.
The Test That Actually Settles It
Ask yourself one question: in a typical month, how many times do you need food that goes beyond daily family meals? If the answer is "rarely, maybe a birthday," a cook who can handle the occasional bigger meal is enough. If the answer is "most weeks, we have guests or entertain for work," you need a chef, and hiring a cook for that role will show within the first month.
Where This Goes Wrong in Practice
The most common mistake we see is a household advertising for a "cook" with a job description that is really a chef's role, entertaining, event menus, then getting frustrated when candidates cannot deliver. The second most common mistake is the reverse: paying chef-level salary for someone who is really doing daily family cooking, because the ad used the fancier title.
Verification Is the Same Either Way
Whichever role you hire, the background check does not change: CNIC verified against NADRA records, a Police Character Certificate from the candidate's own local police station, and previous employers called directly by us. Chefs additionally go through a practical cooking assessment relevant to their claimed specialty, since a resume that says "trained chef" is easy to write and harder to prove.
Getting Started
Tell us honestly how you actually eat day to day, not how you'd like to entertain in theory, and we will recommend the right category. Every placement, cook or chef, is monthly, hired directly by you, with a one-time placement fee and a 6-month replacement guarantee.
